Knowledge is the Most Powerful Piece of Exercise Equipment

Knowledge the ultimate exercise equipment.  It is not hard to get a good workout without any equipment whatsoever.  What you do need is some great knowledge about strength, endurance, and physiology.  The good news is that that information is now just clicks away and can be consumed in almost any format.

Magazines

These are possibly the most famous of all fitness materials.  Information just fits nicely between the covers of a magazine and thus the proliferation of fitness mags.  Some good some not so good, but at least the not so good ones usually provide some motivation and lots of advertising.  These are easy to throw in a bag and save for a little down time and the information is usually pretty timeless.

Books

Not quite as easily consumable as magazine but they are able to cover information in much more depth than magazines, they can lay out detailed programs and present information in a much more methodical approach than mags.  Fitness book are no longer just encyclopedias of medical related topics but are normally thoughtfully written with the amateur enthusiast in mind.  This market is also facing the potential for huge change with the advent of popular e-readers, tablet computers, and numerous e-books.  This content is evolving into a much more useful and consumable format than it has been in the past

Podcasts

A personal favorite of mine because of the informal nature and the originality of content.  Podcasts are here to stay because of their portability and ease of entry, not to mention that many of these programs are highly informative and very interesting.  The fulfill the niche that talk radio filled for many years but you are able to control the content to a much higher degree and avoid much of the advertising.

Web Sites

The new media, not so new anymore.  Virtually all of the best trainers have a huge web presence and it is as easy as doing a google search to find the latest cutting edge information on amateur fitness or highly technical studies.  Much of the information on the internet is free and there are many subscription sites where you can get even better information.  I must make the usual warning about checking for accuracy on the internet and being aware of who is publishing the information.  There is lots of good information and lots of information that is not so good, kind of like magazines.

Information is power, the power to take control of your fitness and your life.  This is possibly the most import piece of exercise equipment in the gym so arm yourself to the teeth.
